Acne vulgaris is a common chronic disease involving blockage and/or inflammation of pilosebaceous units (hair follicles and their accompanying sebaceous gland).
The severity of acne can be classified as mild, moderate, and severe. Mild acne is classically defined by presence of clogged skin follicles(known as comedowns) limited to face with occasional inflammatory lesions. Moderate acne is said to occur when a higher number of inflammatory papules and pustules occur on the face and are found on the trunk of the body. Severe acne is said to occur when nodules or cysts appear on face, chest, upper arms, back and buttocks, commonly referred as nodulocystic acne which causes severe scarring.
Acne is a disease and should be treated by a physician. Nodulocystic acne if untreated can cause severe scarring. This can be prevented by proper treatment.
